Danish teenager Holger Rune has been taking the tennis world by storm with his impressive results on the ATP Tour. Still just 20 years old, Rune has broken into the top 30 in the world rankings on the back of three titles in Munich, Stockholm, and Paris. In an exclusive interview with the French daily L’Equipe, Rune’s performance coach Mike James linked the young Dane’s playing style to two of the greatest players of all time.
Holger Rune’s power, athleticism, and never-say-die attitude are reminiscent of Novak Djokovic’s dominance in his prime. At the same time, the Dane possesses the shot-making flair and versatility that Roger Federer used to mesmerize opponents. And now, James’ words hint at a positive future for Rune.

“His explosiveness, his creativity, his sense of the game mark me, but the most important thing is his mentality. He is the ultimate competitor, he has this obsession to win, even in table tennis!,” James told L’Equipe. James has worked closely with Rune for several years now and understands what makes him tick both on and off the court.
Mike James goes on to add, “Holger is curious, always asks questions and is in work mode all the time. He sometimes sends us, in the middle of a tournament, a message at 11 p.m: ‘What do you think of that?’”
When asked directly about comparisons to other players, James saw similarities between Rune’s game and the styles of Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer. He said, “Holger is Holger, he has his own game. But if I had to make a comparison, he could be a mix of Djokovic and Federer. Novak for repeatability and power, Roger for flair and creativity.” James continued, “This is an ideal, of course. But it would be nice to take half of each.” (L’Equipe)
