Sebastian Korda’s dream run at the Australian Open 2023 came to a disappointing end. In the fourth round, the 22-year-old couldn’t beat his Russian opponent Karen Khachanov. The American struggled from the start of the match and was in trouble because of an injury. His injury worsened and Korda could not finish the match.
He retired midway through the third set to hand over the victory to the Russian star. Here’s what he said about the seriousness of his injury later.

The American came off an impressive final run in the Adelaide International. While he lost the final to Novak Djokovic there, he made an impressive start in the Australian Open. At just 22 years, the American played several brilliant matches en route to the quarterfinal.
However, the 22-year-old was unlucky as he suffered an injury blow and lost the quarterfinal clash against Karen Khachanov. After losing the first two sets, Korda was in immense pain in the last set and decided to retire early. Later, interacting with the press, the American revealed the seriousness of his injury.
“I knew kind of what it was right away, right when I hit the return. I kind of felt that spot that I was feeling before,” Korda said.
He further added, “Like I said, some forehands I couldn’t even hold the racquet. Volleying was almost impossible for me. So it was a little tough.”

It is sad to see an immensely talented youngster going out this way. Hopefully, he will recover quickly as the year has just begun.
Khachanov applauded Korda
With this win, Karen Khachanov has made it to the back-to-back semifinals in Grand Slam events. However, the win came in a different fashion as the opponent was unable to finish the match because of an injury. Later, interacting with the media, the Russian heaped praise on the young American tennis star.

Khachanov also applauded Korda for his amazing victory against former world number one Daniil Medvedev, before expressing his disappointment over the unfortunate injury and said that it is never a way any tennis player wants to win a match.
