He said in an interview with People, “There were times growing up where she’d get sober, but it was never sustained. As her child, I felt like I was convincing her for 20 years: You should want to live. It’s not that bad. But she didn’t see it that way, or she couldn’t see past her pain — emotional, physical, spiritual.”

Kevin McEnroe shared in the interview that since the past three years, his mother has changed. After she had a fatal drug overdose along with a stroke. He also said that he knew that the person he knows was always there. Further, he added that O’Neal overdosed on a few drugs and then she went into a six-week coma. This caused her to have a gnarly stroke and had almost died.

But over the last three years, she started fighting to get sober. O’Neal’s daughter Emily also said in the same interview that her story is of redemption and survival. She also hopes that her story helps someone else who also struggles with drugs or any other addiction.
