“I think he’s bringing a fresh look to my game and I’ll be able to benefit from that,” said Novak Djokovic after adding Andy Murray to his team. Once fierce rivals on the court, the two joined hands for the Australian Open after the Serbian made an official announcement on 23rd, November 2024. While this was the Brit’s first coaching stint, there was certainly a lot that he needed to improve on. Opening up on that, he revealed some key insights.

Andy Murray recently shared his thoughts on coaching Novak Djokovic and revealed insights from their time together at the Australian Open. Under Murray’s guidance, Djokovic reached the semi-finals but suffered a hamstring tear, ending his run. Despite the injury, Djokovic had dropped only three sets in the tournament. Murray spoke about his coaching journey, saying, “I always knew I would enjoy coaching. I never thought otherwise, but there are things I’ve learned that were maybe a bit different than what I expected.”

Murray, who played his last event at the Paris Olympics 2024 and retired, acknowledged areas in which he needs to improve as a coach. “There’s certainly areas I will need to get better at, for example, the technical side of the game. As a player, I would understand the basics, but not extremely well like some very experienced coaches.”

He also reflected on learning from others. Murray admitted, “Some of the guys I’ve worked with over the years have been very strong in that area. Preparing for the matches and those things is very interesting to me. I like that side of things.”

Djokovic has not won a Grand Slam since his 2023 US Open victory. However, he secured gold at the Paris Olympics, beating Alcaraz in the final a year later at the Paris Olympics. Djokovic is also set to miss the Qatar Open in February owing to his injury.

While the two worked wonders at the Australian Open, there is still no certainty if the two would be staying together. Novak Djokovic opened up on their future possibilities.

Novak Djokovic has not yet discussed continuing his partnership with Andy Murray as a coach after the Australian Open. After his semi-final retirement against Alexander Zverev due to a left leg muscle tear, Djokovic revealed he needed time before addressing the next steps.

“I don’t know. We both were disappointed with what just happened, so we didn’t talk about the future steps,” said Djokovic. “We are so fresh off the court. I’ll definitely have a chat with Andy and thank him for being here with me. Give him my feedback, which is, of course, positive, and see how he feels and we make the next step.”

Djokovic talked about the need for a cooling-off period. “We are still hot-headed and disappointed, so it’s kind of hard to switch the page and start talking about what the next steps are. I think we both need to cool off a little bit and then we’ll have a chat,” he added.

Murray, a fellow former World No. 1 and Djokovic’s long-time rival, echoed the sentiment. “Me and Novak agreed that after the tournament we would speak,” said Murray. “We’ll do that.”

Despite the Australian Open ending on a sour note, Murray praised Djokovic and his team for their efforts throughout the tournament. While there is no certainty about their future, Novak Djokovic’s quest for his 100th ATP title is still on. While he is set to miss the next few tournaments owing to his injury, the next possible destination for the Serb could be the Roland Garros. With the tournament happening in Europe, there are chances that Murray could still be there. Would you like to see Andy Murray sticking with Djokovic? Let us know in the comments below!
