Chris Eubanks is a player who surprised many tennis followers in the latter part of this year. While he was rising steadily in the early part of the year, his performance in Wimbledon took many by surprise as he ousted several prominent players. Now, as the tennis season has concluded, Eubanks appeared in an interview where he explained why it was important to ignore rankings to rise.

Eubanks is not the only one who decided to remove his focus from rankings. Like him, Ben Shelton surprised many with his improvement, and he adopted a strategy similar to Chris Eubanks.

The 27-year-old American player showed an improvement in his performance when he came to Wimbledon, which helped him climb up to rank 34. However, before he managed to compete in the grass slam, he was facing difficulties simply entering the top 100. Interviewing with Tennis Channel, Chris Eubanks explained why he couldn’t manage to rise and how a change in his mindset helped him cover the gap.

Chris Eubanks said, “I did not play well for three consecutive weeks going into Miami, where I kind of thought that next match gets me top 100, this match gets me top 100. Then at Miami I thought ‘You know what, let’s delete ranking off the phone. Let’s just go out here and play one match at a time’. And then sure enough, I found myself inside the top 100 and then things just kinda kept going from there.”

Eubanks discovered that he does not need to look at the rankings. He further explained, “It begins to be a bit frustrating and a bit all consuming at times“. Instead of focusing on his rankings, he said that he would invest the time in the process and stay in shape.

The strategy he used helped him jump up the ATP ladder. After him, another American ATP star used a similar strategy to make his climb and finished the year in great fashion.

Ben Shelton on the mindset which helped him rise

Before the Shanghai Masters, Ben Shelton talked to ATP Radio about the mindset he has followed, which helps him move forward. He said that being in the top 20 was a new thing for him. But he does not set a number in his mind when thinking about rankings because, to him, it feels as though he is setting a ceiling in place. He focuses on showing up to tournaments and on winning titles.
