Is Djokovic really an underdog, or is this just another mind game from the tennis legend?

The swing of a wounded lion is far more terrifying than its roar! Novak Djokovic is still alive at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. He is hungry to pounce on his prey and get the taste of his first title triumph of this season. Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz and the 7-time winner of this competition are just one win away from a repetition of last year’s final at SW19. The Serb ran a race against time to get just fit enough to play at Wimbledon. No one was 100% sure of his availability in this tournament, but he has now proved himself yet again by moving into the last four. Although he believes he isn’t performing at his best, Alcaraz’s coach thinks otherwise.

Juan Carlos Ferrero recently gave an interview to Marca where he hailed Djokovic’s rapid recovery as “record-breaking”. Ferrero said, “He’s made a record-breaking recovery. I think he’s doing pretty well, but he says he’s far from being at his best. He’s in the semi-finals at the moment. I’ve seen him move pretty well. Here he hits the ball fantastically, especially if it’s indoors because it doesn’t move at all and he hits everything in the center.” Apart from all these, Djokovic will be entering the semis after having a good recovery time, since his opponent gave him a walkover in the QF.

This may play a big factor in his SF match against Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti. Can he reach the finals of Wimbledon yet again this year? We just need to wait a few more hours to get this answer, but the tennis bigwigs are already considering him as a threat for the rest of the season. A few days ago, Vijay Amritraj said Novak Djokovic knows how to handle his body and he will not play any tournament to win one or two matches, but he always feeds his hunger with seven. So far, he has almost ticked five, now it’ll interesting to see if can bring success in two more.

Look, when everyone says, ‘Novak is done, he’s just had knee surgery, he’s wearing a brace, he’s not moving as well he used to’, the first thing I tell them is, do not bet against greatness,” said Prakash Amritraj’s dad in that same interview. Even Juan Carlos Ferrero is wary of this challenge as he looks really concerned if Alcaraz somehow sneaks into the finals.

The 44-year-old Spanish former tennis player, Ferrero, has always been a huge admirer of the Serb. Previously during an interview with El Larguero, he praised Novak Djokovic by highlighting some of his outstanding qualities, which makes the game more interesting to watch. “I’m running out of praise. I drool watching him when he plays, how he touches the ball, how he moves. When he’s mentally fine, and he doesn’t get distracted by certain things, it’s outrageous,” said Juan Carlos Ferrero.

He absolutely loves the way the Serb handles the vital moments in the matches. The Spaniard further went on to highlight how there is not one single instance during Djokovic’s matches when one sees him miss two balls in a row throughout the game. He wants to set this as a benchmark for all the players and urges them to follow the Serb’s trails. When asked to reflect a bit on who he thinks is the real GOAT of the tennis world, Ferrero said one may like Federer for his playing style, and Nadal for his dedication but it’s always undeniably Novak Djokovic for him.
