Is Holger Rune's fiery attitude hurting his game, or is it just part of his competitive edge?

Carlos Alcaraz is on cloud 9 after back-to-back Grand Slam victories. Last week, the Spanish sensation defeated Novak Djokovic in a lop-sided contest to win his second Wimbledon title. Alcaraz had already won the French Open earlier this year and victory at Wimbledon gave him his fourth major trophy. Subsequently, the tennis world sent congratulatory messages to him. Even his rival and good friend, Holger Rune, heaped praise on Alcaraz. However, the Spanish star has returned the praise in a rather strange way with an unwanted admission about Rune.

Earlier today, Alcaraz was involved in a fun question-and-answer session where he made some interesting admissions. One of the questions posed to Alcaraz was about who’s the biggest trash talker in town. The Spanish superstar broke into laughter before admitting that Holger Rune was that person. He responded, “Rune. Sorry, but that’s what I thought.”

Interestingly, Rune has often supported Alcaraz in his views, despite having an intriguing rivalry with the Spaniard. However, Alcaraz felt that Rune was guilty of it on numerous occasions for his controversies on the court. Take the example of the Monte Carlo Masters earlier this year. During Rune’s match against Jannik Sinner, the Dane was handed a time violation at a crucial juncture in the match.

Subsequently, the crowd jeered at Rune and the Dane responded to them by making an action of keeping quiet. Rune then received a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct, to which he responded by yelling at the chair umpire, “Call the supervisor, I cannot get one [a warning] for this – I did not say the bad words to them.”

Thus, Alcaraz felt that Rune was the biggest trash talker in town due to his controversial busts up on the court. However, on some occasions, the Dane has also supported Alcaraz in his views.

The Spanish sensation has often spoken about the pressures of social media and how negatively it affects the players. During an interview with Indian Wells Press, Rune said, “I try to avoid reading social media as much as possible, to be honest. I’m less and less on social media. I try to give back to all my fans. I think it’s important because it means a lot really. ‘It’s great to have these encouraging people and fans that stand behind you. Lift you up when you need it. Then there are also the haters obviously. We need both, right?”

Despite Rune supporting Alcaraz, the latter believes that he often talks trash. Do you agree with Alcaraz’s views about Rune? Let us know your views in the comments below.
