The world of tennis holds its integrity because of the existence of one of the most fair and organized authority systems. The season 2023 incurred a major spot on the integrity of the WTA as tennis star Aryna Sabalenka ignited a spark in the debate regarding irrelevant playing conditions. It’s been just a few days since the tournament concluded and now, Carlos Alcaraz has come forward with a concern over ATP.
As the most awaited tournament of the year began to deliver the fun that fans were looking for, the ATP finals in Turin are expected to be a great hit. However, as soon as the tournament started, Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz opened up about a concern targeting the ATP. Carlos Alcaraz, the rising tennis star, recently came forward with a concern over the frequent ball change situation. Expressing his frustration after facing a defeat against Alexander Zverev, the young Spaniard has been creating a deep analysis of the situation. The issue, raised several times throughout the 2023 season, became a topic of discussion but this time, Alcaraz, along with raising the concern, demanded a change.
In a recent statement, the young player highlighted the astonishing reality that players could encounter up to 20 or 21 different balls in a single year. Alcaraz argues that this constant variation poses a serious risk to players’ health, leading to injuries that could potentially hinder their performance in the long run. He mentioned, “I think if I hear well, we’ve played with 20 or 21 different balls, something like that, in a year. It’s crazy. There are a lot of players that got injured because of that. If the ATP want the best players in every tournament, they should change it. If not, every player’s going to be injured because of that.”
As Alcaraz raised his voice on this issue for the first time, the urgency in his tone suggested a genuine concern for the well-being of tennis players on the ATP tour. However, many other talented players, besides the young Spaniard, came forward with their concerns on social media.

Carlos Alcaraz isn’t the only player who raised a call for change in the tennis ball scenario. Looking back to the China Open this year, Belgian player Zizou Bergs, who recently recovered from a wrist injury, also came forward to express similar concerns on Instagram. Bergs highlighted the rising number of wrist injuries among players and suggested that the constant change in balls could be a possible reason for that factor.

Three-time Grand Slam winner Stan Wawrinka also joined the conversation, responding to Bergs’ post with a simple yet supporting “yep” and an eye-rolling emoji. Along with them, the Russian tennis star Daniil Medvedev also came forward to let out his frustration as he described the balls as “super fluffy”. He compared the experience of playing with them to “throwing a big heavy ball” as they wore down during matches. As more players, including high-profile figures like Wawrinka and Medvedev, express their discontent with the current ball-changing practice, it becomes evident that Alcaraz’s call for uniformity is resonating across the tennis fraternity.
