“I am a very ambitious person and I want to win the Australian Open to complete the career Grand Slam,” said former World No.1 and four-time Major winner Carlos Alcaraz last year. After scripting history at the Roland Garros back in June 2024 and defending his Wimbledon title in July at the All England Club, the Spaniard has his sights set on the coveted trophy in Melbourne. With his new kit bag, he has made it visibly clear, to all his opponents arriving in Australia ahead of the event’s commencement this Sunday.

Days before the Major in Melbourne, all players are busy in practice sessions. So it’s normal for them to flaunt fresh sets of bags. Alcaraz has also arrived in the city with a new bag. But it’s not your typical tennis kit bag. What’s special about it then? Eurosport’s official Instagram account shared a picture on Wednesday, giving a glimpse of the Spaniard’s brand-new kit bag. When looked closely, it features three star symbols, in red, green, and blue colors. Clearly, they are indicating the three Grand Slams Alcaraz has won so far.

Alcaraz clinched his first-ever Major, aged 19, in 2022 at the US Open. Beating Norway’s Casper Ruud in the final, he lifted the trophy after winning with a scoreline of 6–4, 2–6, 7–6(1). The following year, he defeated 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic 1–6, 7–6(6), 6–1, 3–6, 6–4 at the All England Club to win the Wimbledon. Last season was a double delight for him as he won back-to-back Major titles.

Firstly, the Spaniard won the title at the Roland Garros, conquering Alexander Zverev 6–3, 2–6, 5–7, 6–1, 6–2 in the final. Then in July 2024, he defeated Djoker, again, with a scoreline of 6–2, 6–2, 7–6(4) to defend his Wimbledon title. The only jewel missing in his Grand Slam collection now is the Australian Open.

Carlos will be keen to add another star to his kit bag and will leave no stone unturned to to complete a Career Slam this month in Melbourne. The 21-year-old has big ambitions for the prestigious event down under. So much so, that he’s willing to have a dedicated AO tattoo. Even if it means going against his father’s wish!

Carlos Alcaraz wants to have an Australian Open victory tattoo

What’s your perspective on:

Will Alcaraz's ambition to defy his father for an AO tattoo fuel his Australian Open victory?

Have an interesting take?

For the unversed, Carlos Alcaraz currently has two tattoos. The first one signifies his Grand Slam victory at the US Open, marked by an inked date “11.09.22” on his arm. Then there’s another date “16.07.23” inked on his leg to commemorate the day he won his first Wimbledon title. However, after clinching two more Majors in 2024, at the French Open and then again at Wimbledon, he didn’t have a new tattoo. But it doesn’t mean he won’t!

Alcaraz’s father isn’t a huge fan of his tattoos. That’s why he only allowed him to ink the dates for his first two Grand Slam victories. But the Spaniard now wants more! “I am a very ambitious boy and I want more and Australia is what I want to tattoo, although my father does not like it very much,” he said last year, clearly expressing his desire to lift the Australian Open. “Being champion there is my main objective for next season,” he added.

Carlos Alcaraz’s best performance at the Major down under came last season. In January 2024, he managed to reach the QF round. However, his dream was shattered by Alexander Zverev. The World No.2 German ATP pro defeated Alcaraz 6-1, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4. Will the Spaniard improve on his record this time, with a new kit bag to remind him of his goal? Only time will tell.
