In the tennis world, players are known to build their names with their dedication and hard-to-beat performances. Being recognized and appreciated for these qualities is what every player expects. Moving in quite the opposite direction, young Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz recently faced a comment, not for his many achievements and victories on the court, but for a different side of his.
The 2023 season proved to be precious for the young trailblazing Spaniard. After defeating the Serbian legend Novak Djokovic at the Wimbledon finals, the 20-year-old made every tennis star speak highly in his favor. Casper Ruud’s quiet criticism over Carlos Alcaraz
In a recent conversation with the media, ATP player Casper Ruud shared his thoughts on the tennis sensation Carlos Alcaraz. The Norwegian, losing all 4 matches played so far against Carlos Alcaraz, appeared to possess a rather unique approach to the Spanish tennis icon. The revelation of his thoughts, coming out rather unexpectedly, shocked both the fans and the tennis community.
Casper Ruud says Carlos Alcaraz sometimes beats himself:
“Obviously, he plays so aggressive & so great, but, sometimes, it seems like he might beat himself a little. He goes for almost too much, at least in my eyes. I am not going to criticize him any more than this, because… pic.twitter.com/icQlr9Bi2e

Ruud praised Alcaraz’s aggressive playing manner but also pointed out the potential downside of the style that he thinks has helped the 20-year-old win matches. “Obviously, he plays so aggressive & so great, but, sometimes, it seems like he might beat himself a little. He goes for almost too much, at least in my eyes,” Ruud stated. However, he was quick to highlight that he holds great respect for Alcaraz’s talent and did not intend to criticize him beyond this unique observation.

Ruud explained that when a player hits a series of incredible shots, it can be tempting to go for even riskier ones. However, he also shared his conclusion regarding the point as he said, “But I think he’s understood that most matches won’t be won by playing crazy shot after crazy shot. It’s more about stability.” With Ruud delivering the “crazy” remark, this wasn’t the first time the young Spanish star was exposed to it.
Alex Molcan’s “crazy” statement for Alcaraz
As Casper Ruud came up with his unique perspective over Carlos Alcaraz’s playing form, the statement highlighted another similar comment. Slovakian tennis player Alex Molcan, after facing a defeat against Alcaraz, mentioned that he witnessed a different playing style than that of legends like Novak Djokovic. He mentioned, “He’s playing crazy aggressive. He’s fit, he runs, he catches everything. Also Djokovic, he is also running incredibly. But they are different players.”

Although the comment from Alex was meant to be a compliment for the young Spanish, its nature happened to be similar to Ruud’s recent thoughts. With the Norwegian’s comment that presented nuanced critique alongside words of appreciation and respect, another layer to the Spanish gun’s development has come to the fray – especially keeping in mind his recent uncharacteristically inconsistent performances.
