Can Zverev claim the ATP Finals crown without the Big 3, or will Alcaraz steal the show?

Alexander Zverev has got into the form at just the right moment this season. Before qualifying for the ATP Finals, the German clinched a big victory at the Paris Masters last week, adding one more trophy to his collection. Apart from his tennis-focused side, however, Zverev seems to have a fun side to his personality. It was at full display recently ahead of the season finale in Turin. His amusing behavior even made Carlos Alcaraz burst into laughter!

Before the commencement of ATP Finals in Italy, Alexander Zverev, Andrey Rublev, Carlos Alcaraz, and Casper Ruud sat down for a media interaction. It was conducted to find out more about each player’s preparations and motivations leading into the ATP Finals. But little did anyone know that the session would turn out unexpectedly funny. At the beginning of the conference, Zverev was asked about his impressive record at the ATP Finals so far and his confidence on claiming the title after a recent win in Paris.

While he was initially trying to focus on the question, Zverev couldn’t stop himself from laughing out loud. Stressing on his goal of qualifying for the ATP Finals, the German player said, “The beginning of the year when you, when you start the year um my biggest goal obviously is to just qualify for the World finals.” This exact moment became unusually funny as he burst into laughter at his own response. It seems like he had no idea how it happened; he was just giggling. This situation became even more amusing when Alcaraz reacted to the German. “This guy, can’t be serious with this guy, come on,” he said while laughing himself at Zverev’s unusually hilarious response.

Clearly, Zverev had no reason for laughing so hard. But he did provide a fun-induced moment for everyone present in the conference. Speaking of which, the German also spoke about how the upcoming ATP Finals will be a different experience for him knowing that no member of the Big 3 will be present this time.

Alexander Zverev comments on the absence of Novak Djokovic in Turin

For those unaware, Novak recently pulled back his name from the season finale owing to an injury. When asked about the Djoker’s decision to withdraw from the ATP Finals, Alexander said, “We are missing Novak but apart from that, we are the eight best players in the world.” But at the same time “It’s strange to not see Novak here just because of all the success that he had and for me he’s still one of the best players in the world. I mean he qualified for this event, right. He just chose not not to play.”

Realizing that it’s the first event without Djokovic, Federer, and Nadal, Zverev said that previously the big three “were always the highlight of the tournament. They were always, you know, the people that everybody expected to win.” But now he’s shifted his focus on the current rivals likes Carlos and Jannik – the top two in the world. He mentioned that instead of the Big three, now “you have to go through them to win“.

Have an interesting take?

All things considered, Alexander seems to be aware of what he needs to do. He’s just looking to play his best tennis in order to overcome all his rivals in Turin. While Sinner and Alcaraz are fan-favorites, Zverev has got the experience of winning the ATP Finals. In fact, he’s done it twice, with title victories in 2018 and then in 2021 as well. Will this year bring a third trophy for the German tennis sensation? Only time will tell the answer.
