‘Giant-Killer’ achieves a gigantic feat! Alexei Popyrin is currently having a dream run in Montreal. The Australian tennis star recently snapped Sebastian Korda’s incredible eight-match winning streak to book his place in the finals of the Canadian Open. Popyrin outshined several superstars on his way to the finals, but beating someone who’s playing his first tournament after a title triumph in Washington is pretty much extraordinary. This victory has now made him the talk of the town in the tennis world and his girlfriend has also expressed his excitement surrounding this emphatic triumph.

However, the competition is far from over, as he has to surpass the challenge of the current world number 6, Andrey Rublev to get a taste of the title in Montreal. Can he win this match or will the Russian have the last laugh? We need to wait a few more hours to get this answer, but Popyrin’s girlfriend couldn’t control her excitement after the SF. Shortly after his comfortable victory against Korda, Amy Pederick put up a clip displaying the winning moment from the match.

She wrote, “Into the finals. Beyond proud, wow” and attached three ‘heart‘ emojis in the caption. As per several reports, they first met each other in their childhood days while attending the same match class in Dubai. However, the couple started dating each other in 2019. Pederick is a professional physiotherapist and apart from helping her boyfriend with his fitness and training, she has played an enormous role in providing him moral support on tough days. Like for example, Popyrin had a difficult season in 2022 and he fell out of the Top 100.

Reflecting on those tough phases that Popyrin had to go through at that time, Pederick revealed, “It was really tough, mentally – very draining for him and it wasn’t easy. But he stuck through, he grinded, and he pushed through and he trained so hard in pre-season.” She spoke about how the tennis star used to be there on the courts for hours and hours to get back to winning tracks. Results? Pederick said it helped him to start the next year with a positive mindset, “He has had an insane start to the year in 2023. I am incredibly proud.” Popyrin’s performance in Montreal has yet again made her proud!

Will she be present inside the stadium though? Perhaps not. Just a few minutes ago, Pederick gave an update on her Instagram account, which revealed her current location to be in Sorrento, Italy. However, she would surely be watching the match online. Popyrin wouldn’t like to miss out on the chance after coming so close to winning a title in the 2024 season. This year, Popyrin has struggled yet again with his form, but he reached the SF at the Qatar Open and now he has also made it through to his first ATP Masters 1000 final. What did he say after achieving this astonishing feat?

Have an interesting take?

Alexei Popyrin is currently eyeing his third title in his seven-year-old professional career. However, more than this he has also a chance to write his name in the history books of Australian tennis. No Australian player has won a Masters 1000 title since Lleyton Hewitt in 2003 (Indian Wells Masters). Alex de Minaur reached the finals of the Toronto Masters 1000 event in 2023, but he failed to win the title. It’s time for Popyrin to step up!

Reflecting on his thoughts on reaching the finals, the Aussie tennis star said, “It means the world… it’s an amazing achievement for myself to be honest, and sometimes you have to pat yourself on the back.” His excitement was clearly portrayed through his facial expressions after the win, but ahead of him lies a bigger challenge. Rublev has been in good form this season, and he’s surely a hard nut to crack, but as the Australian’s nickname suggests, perhaps ‘Pop’ loves popping! So fasten your seatbelts for an epic Grand Finale.
