Is Carlos Alcaraz's mental exhaustion a sign of over-scheduling in tennis, or just part of the game?

Carlos Alcaraz‘s struggles for the season have finally reached a disappointing conclusion. The Spaniard was flushed out of the year-end ATP Finals by German rival Alexander Zverev. After losing the contest in straight sets, the young talent expressed that he missed his close ones. A hectic touring commitment coupled with mental exhaustion drew those feelings.

The four-time Grand Slam champion admitted feeling mentally drained after a demanding season compromised his energy to carry forth multiple times this year after losing to Norwegian Casper Ruud in the event’s round-robin opener. “Mentally, I am tired. It’s many matches in a very tight schedule, in a demanding year with not too many resting days”. He experienced a sharp drop in form during the North American hardcourt swing, wherein he felt exhausted while experiencing overwhelming emotions due to his Olympic gold medal match defeat to Novak Djokovic.

Despite battling medical concerns and trouble with breathing, Alcaraz couldn’t advance further in Turin. After he was eliminated from the event, the Spaniard told reporters that although he aims to stay “mentally fresh” for matches and make the most of the “privilege” to perform at the highest level in the sport, it is hard for him to stay away from home because of the consistent traveling. Later, he hoped to retain more fuel in the tank and “be better on that part”.

He said, “It is not easy, at least for me, traveling a lot in this part of the year. I miss home. I want to spend time with my close people at home. I have to travel. I have to play more tournaments, more matches.” However, not everything went negatively for the Spanish sensation in Turin.

By courtesy of his stellar performances, Alcaraz has earned a rich fanbase. Notably, some fans are eager – mildly put – to spend countless priceless moments with him.

Carlos Alcaraz receives a marriage proposal in Turin

After falling short of his opening-round victory at the ATP Finals, Carlos Alcaraz was determined to sign off on his formidable self. He unleashed that against Russian rival Andrey Rublev in the following round. Afterward, the Spanish superstar was seen on the streets of Turin, signing autographs for fans. However, what came next, was hardly expected by anyone, let alone Alcaraz.

Notably one of his biggest admirers, a fan who goes by the username trentotogradii on X, aired an amusing interaction with the former World No. 1. She presented the Spaniard with a marriage proposal saying “casate conmigo”, a Spanish term that translates to “will you marry me”. Naturally, this made Alcaraz shy and he laughed it off, moments before the fan asked him the same question thinking if he had listened to what she said.

With just an appearance at the Davis Cup Final 8 in Malaga pending, Alcaraz’s touring calendar is clear. The former World No. 1 will likely travel back home, spend time with his family, and recoup for the 2025 rubber, starting with the Australian hardcourt season.
