In fanhood for athletes, sentiments often intertwine with the essence of sportsmanship. Federer was entangled in a peculiar narrative during an unplanned visit to the Biathlon World Cup in Lenzerheide. Little did he know that Klemen Bauer, a skilled biathlete and an avid fan, believed he held a piece of his past. It was a broken racket that had weathered the storms of time. The beautiful and snowy Lenzerheide served as the stage for a rendezvous fueled by Bauer’s determination and unexpected events. Athletes from diverse disciplines had paid homage to Federer, but what unfolded this time added a unique chapter to this saga.

Even though it turned out that the racquet wasn’t actually Federer’s, he still signed it. Bauer wrote to BLICK for the whole internet to understand the situation better. Clutching the broken racket, he recalled: “I kept a broken racket from that time, thinking it was Roger’s.” The anticipation of Federer’s presence in Lenzerheide triggered a realization for him. It was a chance to fulfill a dream that had lingered since the 1999 tournament in Slovenia.

In his words: “It has always been my dream to have him sign the racket. Suddenly, I received an SMS asking me to come back as quickly as possible.” He further called Federer a true gentleman since he recognized Bauer and effortlessly reminisced about their encounter two decades prior. Per him: “He’s a real gentleman. It was like we’d known each other for 20 years.”
