A ‘yes‘ from Rafael Nadal made Roger Federer‘s farewell game more special! But now, two years after the amazing farewell doubles match at the Laver Cup, the 42-year-old tennis legend is ready to come out of retirement. Recently, the 20-time Grand Slam champion opened up about playing tennis for one last time just for his dear friend, Rafa.
While the Spaniard is struggling a bit to have a successful year, and while 2024 can be his last year on tour, Federer recently revealed how he would like to play one last double with the 22-time Grand Slam champion. He stated, “I don’t think we’ll play doubles together at the Laver Cup, but if he asks me, I’ll definitely be there.”
Federer retired on his own terms, just as he had hoped Rafael Nadal would someday. Following months of struggling with injuries, the legendary Swiss player decided to call it quits in London. Federer had in mind playing a doubles match with his longtime nemesis, Rafael Nadal, as his parting gift to the game. In an interview on The Daily Show, Federer talked about the intense phone conversation he had with Nadal.

He stated, “I had to call him up and tell him ‘Hey Rafa, just before you make any other plans, I would love you to be at the Laver Cup and play maybe one last doubles with me. It would be amazing. Unfortunately, my knee is not good anymore and I think, it’s the end, you know?’”
The end to that graceful way of moving about the court and the swing of his raquet eventually came. The era of the King was over; but can it be revived for one last match? At the same tournament as his last game? It would certainly be a different game than what Federer used to produce at the height of his career. Just as it would today, a lot of hard work went into every match.
