El Nino himself has expressed his disappointment in a statement, saying, “I’m really disappointed to share that I won’t be able to compete at the Laver Cup in Berlin next week.” He emphasized the importance of the team, stating, “This is a team competition, and to really support Team Europe, I need to do what’s best for them, and at this moment there are other players who can help the team deliver the win.”

Reflecting on his experiences, Nadal further added, “I have so many great, emotional memories from playing Laver Cup, and I was really looking forward to being with my teammates and with Bjorn in his final year as captain. I wish Team Europe the very best of luck and will be cheering them on from afar.”

Team Europe has yet to announce a replacement for Rafael Nadal, after his withdrawal. At the moment, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Casper Ruud, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Alexander Zverev make up the team, which Bjorn Borg captains. In light of Nadal’s exit, Team Europe will have to decide quickly in order to complete their roster for the forthcoming tournament.

Nadal was last seen on the court at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris. On the other hand, Nadal had declared back in April that he would compete in the Laver Cup. There, he fell to eventual champion Novak Djokovic in the men’s singles second round and to Carlos Alcaraz in the men’s doubles quarterfinals.
