Alexander Zverev has had a disappointing start to the 2022 season. Recently, he was involved in a controversy at the Abierto Mexicano in Acapulco, Mexico. He smashed his racket on the chair of the umpire after losing his doubles encounter. Moreover, he came agonizingly close to hitting the chair umpire as well.

Following the incident, Zverev was under the threat of facing severe actions for his outburst. Recently, the officials announced the severity of sanctions against him. For his unacceptable actions, the tournament officials at Acapulco defaulted the German as well.

Alexander Zverev faces eight weeks of suspension
The ATP Tour announced the actions against him today. “Zverev has been issued an additional fine of 25,000 and a suspension for a period of 8 weeks from any ATP-sanctioned event,” read the statement.
The German is currently put on a probation period till 22 February 2023. Both his fine and suspension will be canceled if there are no more code violations till then.

The incident took place during Alexander Zverev’s Round of 16 doubles clash against Lloyd Glasspool and Harri Heliovaara. Partnering with Marcelo Melo, they lost a closely-fought match. Zverev was visibly disappointed by some of the calls of the umpire over the course of the match. Subsequently, after the match, he smashed his racket at the chair of the umpire in frustration.

Zverev’s 2022 season
The German tennis star hasn’t had an ideal start to this season. He began his campaign this year at the ATP Cup, winning two matches out of three. Further, he had a disappointing Australian Open campaign. He had high expectations, however, he could not proceed beyond the fourth round, losing to Denis Shapovalov in straight sets.
Further, he lost in the finals in Montpellier and had to withdraw from the Acapulco tournament after the controversy. With the ATP announcing actions against him, he will be out for eight weeks from any ATP-sanctioned event. However, he will be in action at Indian Wells, with the fine and suspension being on probation.
