After his 2023 Wimbledon victory, 20-year-old Carlos Alcaraz is a new man. Starting with the rise in his popularity, he is one of the most promising tennis stars who can continue the legacy of the Big Three. But did you know that he made his first move toward professional tennis almost a decade ago, similar to another tennis legend?
Alcaraz was then still in the early phase of his career and well away from the spotlight. A well-known agent that has worked for many A-list tennis talents, including Maria Sharapova, recently disclosed how the present World No. 1 player signed a major deal as a young boy.

Alcaraz might have left a lasting impression with his Wimbledon performance, but this was not the first time he impressed some important people. When he was barely 12 years of age, Carlos Alcaraz caught the attention of Albert Molina, the Murcia native?s current agent. In a recent interview with The Tennis Podcast, Max Eisenbud, Russian great Sharapova’s longtime agent, spilled the details of what went down. Turns out, his colleague Molina knew that the Spaniard was special right from the start.
He said, “One of my colleagues, Albert Molina, spotted Carlos Alcaraz at age 12. And signed him. So there are some times that we are signing players that are that young. Usually, we’d like to wait, as you know, 13-14 to see the maturity. But sometimes that special player comes along that it’s just so obvious that you want to be part of and you know, we’re proud.”
While the Spaniard was a skinny kid who did a lot of things very well, he certainly impressed many as an enthusiastic kid. A bold gamble such as his is reminiscent of another player – the 41-year-old Swiss legend, Roger Federer. Let us take a look at the huge coincidence the young Spaniard shares with the 20-time Grand Slam champion.

A huge coincidence between Alcaraz and Federer?
The 20-year-old tennis player from Spain signed his first deal with an agent at the age of 12. Similarly, the Swiss maestro signed one of his first deals with Nike when he was just 13 years old. Not only that, but former Nike director Nakajima also found Federer’s charisma endearing even before he gained popularity on the tennis court. Apparently, when Nike signed the Swiss ace, few people knew about him, but their partnership lasted almost 24 years.

But even after sharing a lucrative long-term partnership with Nike, the Swiss tennis legend left in 2018 to endorse Uniqlo and experience a different outlook on fashion. Looking at the way he is following Federer’s footsteps, it would be great to see if Alcaraz can achieve the greatness that Federer has seen in the tennis arena.
