The men’s tennis team at Boise State University is going through a hard time right now. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) penalized the team after it emerged it had violated recruitment regulations. According to the NCAA’s official announcement, the violations happened during the tenure of Kristian Widen, the team’s former head coach.
Widen wasn’t to blame for any of the violations, but one of her assistant coaches has been found guilty of multiple breaches. The NCAA leveraged its latest Negotiated Resolution Process to resolve the case. So far, Boise State has not contested it.

The assistant coach’s violations of NCAA’s Level II recruitment regulations have proved to be costly for Boise State. NCAA dished out a lengthy two-year probation for the university’s men’s tennis team. NCAA also levied a fine of $5,000 on the team. NCAA’s Committee on Infractions also approved seven other penalties.
Widen’s assistant, who the NCAA did not name, communicated with athletes enrolled across various other universities. The coach also recruited them, even though their names were absent from the transfer portal. According to the NCAA’s investigation, the assistant coach kept violating the regulations for two years.
Additionally, the coach also asked recruits from other universities to help in recruiting more athletes. The coach also offered financial rewards to several athletes if they managed to recruit athletes from other universities to Boise State. The assistant was responsible for more violations as three men’s athletes from another university were targeted for recruitment in Denver.
At the time, Boise State and the other university’s teams were competing at a tournament in Denver.
