Roger Federer broke the hearts of millions around the world after he announced his retirement from professional tennis. However, the Swiss Maestro is not even close to being done with tennis. Instead, the former player has deepened his bond with the game in a different manner. Federer recently announced that he will return to the Shanghai Masters this year for an honor he is supposed to receive.

The Shanghai Masters is returning after an absence of three years due to the Covid-19 pandemic. While his last Shanghai stint came to an unfortunate end, they have decided to honor the two-time champion of the tournament.

After an unfortunate absence for three years, the Shanghai Masters will give another opportunity to players to achieve 1000 points. It comes with even better news. The Masters tournament has decided to give the 20-time grand slam champion their biggest honor. The Masters has named him the Icon Athlete for 2023

Learning about this, Federer shared his excitement about receiving the award and reminisced about his time at the tournament. He also stated that he looks forward to seeing his peers at the event.

I’m very excited to be named Rolex Shanghai Masters Icon Athlete for 2023. I remember coming to Shanghai for the first time for the opening of the stadium and I have been close friends with Juss Event and tournament organizers. I am happy to keep the story going and I look forward to seeing everyone in October.” Federer said.

Additionally, several Twitter users are excited about their favorite player being honored for all his feats. 

Federer exalted by home country

China is not the only country to honor the Swiss Maestro for his career. In 2020, his home country of Switzerland also celebrated his achievements. In collaboration with historian Benedikt Meyer, the Swiss National Museum created a 100-part chronicle of their history. They honored their famous tennis player by making him the conclusion to the chronicle. Federer is the 100th chronicle in the story.
