After a brilliant run in Melbourne, Ben Shelton experienced another major breakthrough campaign at the US Open. The young ATP sensation defeated some of the top seed players including his compatriots Frances Tiafoe and Tommy Paul to reach his maiden semifinal round of a Grand Slam event. Apart from the deepest major run on his home soil, the American tennis star caught the audience’s attention due to his phone ‘dial-in’ celebration during the tournament. It’s been weeks since then, but the celebratory move has caught on and how!

The 21-year-old player’s post-match moves have already impressed many of his fellow Americans in the sporting community. The NCAA star, Myles Murphy is no exception as he recently emulated Shelton’s ‘dialed-in’ celebration during his match.

The second-ranked football team in the Atlantic Coast Conference recently defeated Miami Hurricanes, 41-31. Myles Murphy, who also played a pivotal role in his team’s phenomenal victory, pulled off a celebration that has now become quite popular in the tennis realm.

It came to the public lens after a social media fan page, Josh Tu, shared a picture of the North Carolina football player celebrating in a similar manner to Ben Shelton. He also added a caption on his Instagram story, “@murfoo out here dialed in like @benshelton”

The US Open semifinalist’s post-match gestures have fairly amazed many not just in tennis but in the football community as well. In addition to receiving appreciation, Shelton’s phone call act later attracted a lot of controversies after his matchup against the 24-time singles Grand Slam champion.

Shelton’s contentious US Open incident involving his post-match celebration

After overcoming his compatriot Frances Tiafoe, the current world No. 19  showcased his cold gestures of taking a phone call and later slamming it down. However, the tables turned when Shelton locked horns with Novak Djokovic after the all-American matchup at the U.S. Open. The Serbian tennis legend brushed aside the breakthrough star and later mimicked his ‘dial-in’ celebration in front of a jam-packed crowd.

Djokovic’s sly imitation later attracted a lot of mixed reactions from the tennis community with the 20-year-old issuing a cheeky response. In his press preference, the US Open semifinalist spoke candidly that he was quite ‘flattered’ by the ATP legend’s cold move. He said, “You know, as a kid growing up, I always learned that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery”.
