Ben Shelton had a big year in tennis. He got to practice with famous players like Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. When Shelton first went to Australia last year, it took him a while to get used to the time difference, about eight days. But this year, he adapted much faster, feeling comfortable sooner.

Even though he’s doing well in tennis, Shelton still feels enamored being around big stars like Nadal and Djokovic. “I’d say there’s definitely still a little bit of star-struck,” said Shelton. “I wouldn’t say if I have a practice with those guys.”

He added, “I’m not nervous any more, you know, it just feels like a normal practice. But, yeah, it’s cool to be around those guys. It’s been quick for me the change; from not really being on tour and not knowing anyone to feeling like I know everybody out here.”

The chance to practice with these top players remains an exciting and impressive part of his journey in pro tennis.

Shelton reveals his plans for the upcoming year

Further in the interview, Shelton came ahead and added that he has set his sights on improving himself and bringing out his best game. However, he suggested that his goals are only restricted between him and his team and not the media.

“I have a lot of developmental goals for 2024, things that I want to see improve in my game,” said the 21-year-old. “In terms of result-based goals, I just keep that between me and my team. I feel like there’s no winning in the media. You set your goals too low – people are going to give you a hard time. You set them too high, they’ll give you a hard time. So, that’s for me and my team and I’ll let you know how I did at the end of the year.”
