American men’s tennis hasn’t reached the heights that it did when Andy Roddick lifted the Wimbledon Championships trophy in 2003. However, there seems to be a resurgence as many American players are rising to the top step-by-step. Especially, the likes of Tommy Paul, Taylor FritzBen Shelton, and Frances Tiafoe. Although they share a camaraderie, they also have to compete on tour, making their relationship complicated. Tommy Paul recently spoke out about how they manage to be friends off the court.

The bond between the four Americans seems to be improving despite the losses they have suffered against each other. Paul also talked about how Shelton’s sudden rise improved their dynamic.

The 26-year-old American star has had a rocky season, as his ranking has gone up and down many times. He faced his American compatriots many times this year, and fans have wondered about their bond many times. In the recent edition of the ATP Tennis Radio Podcast, Paul talked about the current situation between the best four men’s American players.

In the ATP Radio Podcast, he said, “I mean, for me, it’s all fun. I think for almost all of us, we have a good time pushing each other.” Paul also said, “I mean, if I was on tour with all the American without any Americans, like I don’t know how long I play the sport, you know, like, I have so much more fun just having them here.”

When further asked about the competitiveness they harbor when playing in the same tournaments, Paul said, “It’s way easier. You know, like, when I’m playing a tournament, I’m not looking at it. Like if I do this, well, in a tournament, like, I’m gonna pass this person, like, I’m just looking at it, like, I want to win every match. And I want them to win every match. And wherever we fall. That’s where we fall.

He further added, “And, you know, I mean, there’s a little bit of not too much, but there’s a little bit of smack talk between us. But like, it’s all like, just for fun, you know, just like purely jokes, and I think we all have a really good time with it.”

Paul has talked about the relationship the four players have after Shelton beat him in the US Open as well.
