Andy Murray, the former world No. 1, accepted a wildcard to play at the ATP 500 event at Rotterdam. Before his first-round match with Alexander Bublik, he shared his thoughts about Juan Martin del Potro’s recent announcement, with Essentially Sports.

Murray himself has dealt with the ugly side of a plethora of injuries for a long time in his career. He could thus relate to what del Potro could be going through. In fact, Murray himself announced he would skip the French Open and the entire clay season, to preserve his fitness.

“I hope he’s doing okay. I feel for him. I know it’s an incredibly difficult situation. But yeah, like I said, hope he manages to finish on a positive note with you know, all his fans behind them and a great atmosphere and yeah, and that he’s as pain free as can be,” he said.

Andy Murray says he feels for Del Potro

Murray reiterated repeatedly how he understood what the Argentinian was going through.

“I guess the tough times and everything that you go through, it’s not on camera. It must have been unbelievably difficult for him. And yeah, I don’t really know what to say. I just, I know having been in that position myself. Oh, yeah, you feel like you’re sort of suffering a lot of the time like, alone,” he said.

Murray also spoke about how he hoped that the Tower of Tandil got the send-off he deserved. As loved as del Potro was in the circuit, Murray also said he must be getting the deluge of support and love, from all his fans, the media, other players, tennis and otherwise.

Murray was quite right as soon after the announcement, fans and supporters of del Potro started pouring in their heartfelt well wishes for the former world No. 3. The Argentinian will participate in home tournament at Buenos Aires as he plays his comeback match against compatriot Federico Delbonis.
