The first Grand Slam event of 2023 broke the all-time world record for the most-attended event in the sport’s history. A record-breaking 840,000 fans attended the Australian Open this season, as it eclipsed all other Grand Slam tournaments. While 800,000 spectators were recorded at the US Open, the French Open had 630,000, and Wimbledon had 530,000.

Notably, in the latest episode of The Ministry of Sport Podcast show, the CEO of Tennis Australia, Craig Tiley, explained the reason behind this remarkable feat. He said, “I think at the Australian Open we have, of any event around the world, we have the youngest demographic and, and that’s because we’ve festivalized the experience, we’ve added music, we’ve added tech experiences, and we’ve food, chefs, a ballpark for kids.”

Aside from ‘festivalizating’ the experience in Melbourne by adding music, food, chefs, and a ballpark, Tiley also opened up about how they made the Australian Open more accessible by reducing the prices.

Craig Tiley on how they made the Australian Open more accessible

In the same podcast show, the 61-year-old asserted that they kept the prices ‘really low’ so that more spectators could attend the major event in Melbourne. Tiley said, “And so we’ve end to end with every single segment, particularly the youth segment, we focus on providing with an experience. So they look forward to coming to the Australian Open, we’ve kept the prices really low, to make it accessible.”

The CEO of Tennis Australia went on to say that the pricing factor also helped them reach a record-breaking spectator number while they eclipsed other popular events, including the US Open. Tiley added. “And we only draw from 5 million people from Melbourne compared to the 25 million people of London, Paris and New York, so that is in itself an achievement.”
