Frustrating scenes in Melbourne yet again! Rain has halted play on Day 4 at the Australian Open. Matches that were being held on courts without a rooftop had to be suspended. One among them is the match between America’s Sebastian Korda and the home favorite, Aleksandar Vukic. In that match, the Aussie took the first set by 6-4, but Sebastian Korda made a strong comeback in the second set. However, the match had to be halted mid-way due to the weather conditions. So, this has now become even more frustrating for the American tennis star!

Sebastian Korda was leading the second set by 4-2 (40-0), and the weather conditions don’t look great at the moment. We’re expecting rain for at least one more hour as of now. Outside courts are a mess today due to all of these, and as per several reports, there will be no play before 19:30 pm on the outdoor courts at the Australian Open. So, it’s quite a disappointing situation for not only the players but also the fans who traveled all the way to watch some exciting matches on Day 4.

Korda has struggled a bit with injuries last year. He ended 2024, off the courts, dealing with discomfort that even forced him to withdraw from the first week of this season. Sebastian Korda had to withdraw his name from the Brisbane International. However, he came back strongly to Adelaide and reached the finals there. In the final match, he went down to Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime by 3-6, 6-3, 1-6. He’s now desperate to make it count in Melbourne. Korda defeated Slovakia’s Lukas Klein in the first match in a four-set thriller. How many sets will he require to beat the Aussie in his second match?

Well, to get this answer we need to first get the match going. According to another update, rain has gone down a bit, and they have started to dry the outdoor courts. However, still, as per the reports, there will be no play before 19:45. Apart from Sebastian Korda’s match, even Arthur Fils, Carballes Baena, Anastasia Potapova, and Arthur Cazaux’s matches have been halted midway. We’re getting updates every minute, and as things stand, British women’s no. 4 Harriet Dart could also be forced to wait for her second-round match against Croatia’s Donna Vekic due to these weather conditions. However, this isn’t the first time that we witnessed these stop and start at the 2025 Australian Open!

Rain, Rain, Go Away—Has now become the mantra at the 2025 Australian Open

According to weather reports, there was a forecast of rain during the second round of the Australian Open (i.e., Wednesday and Thursday). The third round could start under cloudy skies on Friday. However, after that, the next three days, i.e., January 18 to January 20, are predicted to be bright and sunny. On Day 1, heavy rain and thunderstorms disrupted play for quite a significant time. Matches started as scheduled at 11:00 local time on Sunday, but the players on the outer courts were forced off about an hour later.

What’s your perspective on:

Is the Australian Open's outdoor court setup failing players and fans with these constant rain delays?

Have an interesting take?

Due to bad weather conditions, several matches got canceled, and players had to scramble for indoor practice courts. After seeing all these things, American WTA star Nicole Melichar-Martinez vented out her frustration on the tournament organizers by saying, “It’s 5:30 pm… match in progress to finish, and night session not starting until 7 pm. And they cannot put matches on covered courts to finish so players so have to wait ALL day? 😑 @AustralianOpen.”

The weather in Melbourne has been quite wild in the past few days. However, amid all these on Day 4, we saw some exciting matches featuring some of the superstars in the tennis world. Naomi Osaka clinched a hard-fought victory against Karolina Muchova in the second round. Even Jessica Pegula and Aryna Sabalenka clinched victory in their second-round match. However, the biggest surprise of the day was Qinwen Zheng losing her match against Germany’s Laura Siegemund by 6(3)-7, 3-6. Zheng was last year’s finalist, so this is a massive upset at the 2025 Australian Open.

On the men’s side, Novak Djokovic dropped a set against Portugal’s Jaime Faria, but he did manage to reach the next round quite comfortably by winning the third and fourth sets. Carlos Alcaraz also won his match against Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka, but surprisingly in-form American Reilly Opelka lost his match against Tomas Machac. So, we have already seen quite a few surprising exits from this year’s Australian Open. Who’s your pick for this mega event, though?
