Rafael Nadal is on top of the world right now. The 35-year-old scripted one of the most stunning comebacks to defeat Daniil Medvedev of Russia in a five-setter thriller to lift his second Australian Open title. In doing so, the Spaniard created history. He became the first man to win 21 Grand Slam titles, leaving behind long-time rivals Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.

It was one of the greatest games played by the Spaniard. Additionally, the tennis fraternity was full of praise for the 21-time Grand Slam champion. Social media was flooded with words of appreciation for Nadal; his grit and determination were labelled second to none. The 35-year-old got emotional while speaking to the press following his record-breaking feat. Also, he explained how he was drained during the battle, which lasted an incredible 5 hours and 24 minutes.

Rafael Nadal admits he was not physically ready for the Australian Open 2022 finals

During the post-match press conference, the Spaniard was asked about the condition of his foot. The reporter enquired whether, because of his struggles with it, he had been suffering more than usual.

The 35-year-old replied, “I was not ready physically for these kind of battles. Honestly, I didn’t practice enough to be ready for it, but tonight has been very special. I gave it everything that I have inside. Believe me, I am super super tired in all ways. I even can’t celebrate.”

Further, Nadal added, “But, it was the day to give everything. So, I enjoyed it, I enjoyed the fight, the motions, and at the end, [to] have this trophy with me means everything today. So, I can’t be happier and I just want to recover a little bit and enjoy a little bit.”

In what was a roller-coaster summit clash, Rafael Nadal overcame a 2-0 deficit to defeat the second-seed Daniil Medvedev 2-6, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 at the Rod Laver Arena. His name was etched in the history books as the man with the most Grand Slam singles titles.
