Ben Shelton‘s journey at the 2025 Australian Open has been a thrilling ride. His rise from college tennis to the ATP tour surely makes him a standout player this year. However, his campaign came to an end with a straight-sets defeat against Jannik Sinner, who advanced to the second Australian Open final with a commanding 7-6 (2), 6-2, 6-2 victory. Did the unforced errors cost him, or was the opponent just too good for him?

Serving at 6-5 in Melbourne, Shelton was in the lead with two set points but failed to convert them. Sinner broke back and dominated the tie-break, and gained momentum to finish the match in straight sets. Shelton’s serve which has often been his weapon of choice, let him down in the semifinal. He landed 62% of first serves but managed to win only 56% of those points, a significant drop from his usual standard.

Despite the disappointment, Shelton chose to view the tournament optimistically. When asked where he thinks his level is and what he has to do to get where you want to go, he simply replied, “Yeah, I know I’m close. I know my level’s close. I know I have a lot of the stuff that I need. I certainly believe in myself. I just think that the reps against those guys, the consistency of playing those guys, playing a lot of matches in a week or a couple weeks, that will be the goal this year for me.”

Shelton saw his failure with the serves during the big semifinal as an opportunity for growth and learning. “Not having a good serving day or serving week and having a great tournament is a huge positive for me. It’s like being able to recognize the flaws in what I did, in my game, against some of these guys, being able to go back to the drawing board. It gives me a lot of confidence” he said. To make the press conference a little lighthearted Shelton added with a smile, “Next time I’m out there with set points, I’m going to hit the ace.”

Ben Shelton is part of a new wave of American tennis Players, alongside talents such as Frances Tiafor and Taylor Fritz. He represents the country’s best chance at reclaiming dominance on the world stage.

Had Shelton won the title and entered the top 10, he would have joined Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul in achieving a rare milestone. It would have been the first time since April 2006 that three Americans were ranked in the ATP Top 1o, when Andy Roddick, James Blake, and Andre Agassi held those spots.

Although his run fell short, the 22-year-old’s semifinal appearance in Melbourne ensures his rise to world No. 14 on Monday, marking another step in his steady climb up the rankings.
