Back in 2023, tennis saw the stellar rise of Danish tennis superstar Holger Rune, who made everyone fall in love with his game. However, things started to take a U-turn slowly, and after that, a decline in performance games came into existence. The Danish star, who was once regarded as someone who would fill the void created by the Big 3, was struggling with his game. To tackle these, he appointed Boris Becker to coach him late at the end of last year.

However, things did not turn out well and the German legend parted ways with him after the results did not come into the picture. Coming into the Monte Carlo Masters, he was not only hoping for a major turnaround but also securing his rankings in the top 10 as well. But, how far will be able to carry this out?

As things stand, Holger Rune stands in the 7th spot in the recently released ATP rankings, with a total of 3,795 points to his name. While this might look comfortable, it is certainly not. Rune, who came out on top in a 3-set-thriller against Grigor Dimitrov not only managed to make his way into the quarter-finals of the event but also secured his hopes of staying alive in the rankings.

But, the road from here only gets tougher for him. Standing his ground now in the quarter-finals will be the man who has taken the tennis world by storm, Jannik Sinner. A win against the Italian is anything and everything that he will be looking out for. A loss in the quarters will put him in contention to bow out of the top 10, as some of the players ranked below him are still in the event and would be willing to go miles ahead.

Casper Ruud, who stands in the 10th spot with 3,465 points, is still in the hopes of making it through to the semis when he faces Ugo Humbert of France. On the other hand, Stefanos Tsitsipas, who has clay as his strong point, will also be looking to make his way into the semis by defeating Karen Khachanov in the match. Tsitsipas stands in the 12th spot with 3,175 points to his name. Last but not least, Alex de Minaur, who will be facing Novak Djokovic in the quarters, now sits in the 11th spot with 3,355 points.

Rune suggests that he wants to be the number 1 in the world

Thus, with very few points separating them all, it will be interesting to see if Holger Rune really manages to prove his worth and stay in the hunt for the title and a top-10 finish. While he struggles to find his form and struggles for rankings, he has his sights set and now aims for glory.

Even though Holger Rune might struggle to find some momentum at the moment, he is certainly clear about the ideas and the vision that he carries with him. In an interview with ATP earlier this year in Denmark, he made it pretty clear that his top goal is still to be the best in the world and win as many grand slams as he could. “My goal is to be No. 1 in the world and win Grand Slams,” the 20-year-old said in the interview.

But, with the likes of Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and Daniil Medvedev stepping up, the road to the top won’t be an easy ride. But what destination is fun if the journey is not worth it? Will he be able to return to the glory that he was once associated with, and hold the top spot in the future? What are your views on this?
