A historic moment in Houston! For the first time since 1991 (Orlando), all eight quarterfinalists at the 2025 US Men’s Clay Court Championships are from the United States. Talking about this astonishing feat, the 20-year-old Alex Michelsen said, “It’s sick. We have a lot of great guys in the Top 100 right now, 12 or 13, and we’re playing super strong.” The youngster is now all set to face Frances Tiafoe in the QF. Can the relatively experienced campaigner get the better of Michelsen in this all-American clash?

Frances Tiafoe vs Alex Michelsen: Preview

Frances Tiafoe hasn’t been at his best this season. This will be his first QF appearance of 2025. He defeated Australia’s Adam Walton by 7-5,6-3 in the R16, and speaking about his performance in this match, the 27-year-old said, “I felt like I really played every single point, I felt super dialed in. I don’t think I played my best tennis, but I thought it was a good match overall.” He’s happy to get a winning start on clay, but can he keep his winning momentum intact?

Alex Michelsen has been in better form this season. He reached the QF of the ASB Classic and then made it to the SF of the Delray Beach Open as well. Michelsen has already secured two wins in this tournament. His first win came against his compatriot Learner Tien in the R32, and then the second one came against the Frenchman Adrian Mannarino in the R16. He defeated Mannarino by 6(0)-7,6-4,6-2.

Tiafoe vs Michelsen: Head-to-Head

Frances Tiafoe has met Alex Michelsen only once in his career so far. Tiafoe got the better of the youngster at that time, so he currently leads the H2H scoreline by 1-0.

Prediction: Tiafoe will win this match in three sets

Although Alex Michelsen (34) has a win-loss record of 12-8 this season, and it’s just 6-6 for Frances Tiafoe (17), I’ll still keep the Big Foe ahead of the young gun! Reason? Well, we must not forget Tiafoe’s record in this tournament. He won the title here in 2023, and guess what? He also made it to the final last year.

If we take a look at their playing styles, Michelsen is known for his aggressive, all-court style, featuring a powerful serve, a reliable two-handed backhand, and a versatile forehand, allowing him to mix up his shots and come forward to the net. His movement has improved a lot over the years, but it still remains a weakness for him on clay.

On the other side, Frances Tiafoe is known for his powerful baseline game, particularly his heavy, unorthodox forehand and his energetic, stylish on-court demeanor. He’s a strong baseliner who prefers to hit the ball inside the baseline, playing a straightforward offensive game. Tiafoe heavily relies on his big serves, and he has already hit 118 aces this season. Can his ace win the race for him against Michelsen in this epic battle in Houston? My prediction is a resounding yes!
