After an action-packed Wimbledon Championships, the focus has shifted to the Paris Olympic Games, where top tennis superstars will be seen in action. However, after the grass-court season, the players will have to get acclimatized to the clay courts, the surface for tennis at the Paris Olympics. As a result, many top players are seen in action this week. Interestingly, the ATP 250 tournament in Gstaad will see Matteo Berrettini and Quentin Halys go up against each other in the summit clash, both of whom have failed to qualify for the Paris Olympics.

Over the past few years, Berrettini has struggled with injuries that have prevented him from performing consistently at the top. Much was expected of him after reaching the 2021 Wimbledon final. But his stocks have seen a downtrend, with physical issues cropping up. Nonetheless, he is aiming to get back to his best and the ATP Gstaad provides him the perfect platform to do so.

It has been a mixed year for Berrettini. Although he managed to win the Grand Prix Hassan II title and reached the final of a few tournaments, the Italian star has had poor performances in big events like the Masters 1000 tournaments. Additionally, he missed the Australian Open and the French Open this year after not being 100% fit.

Berrettini returned to play at the Wimbledon Championships but went down fighting against his compatriot, Jannik Sinner, in the second round. Following that setback, he will be looking for redemption when he takes on Halys in the summit clash in Gstaad. The 28-year-old has looked in good touch in Gstaad, having dominated his earlier rounds.

On the other hand, Halys has been majorly seen on the Challenger circuit, apart from playing in the Wimbledon Championships. Although he has played continuously on the tour this year, the Frenchman has struggled for form, failing to reach the business end of the tournaments. His performance in ATP Gstaad is the best we’ve seen from him this season. Given their contrasting run-ups this year, it promises to be a thrilling battle between Berrettini and Halys.

Both Berrettini and Halys have been on the ATP tour for long, but they have never faced off against each other on the ATP Tour. They have played each other once before. It was on the ITF tour back in 2015 in the early days of their careers. Playing in the second round of the Italy F24, Halys got the better of Berrettini on that occasion. However, the Italian star has come a long way since then and looks the favorite to win the title in Gstaad.
