Novak Djokovic is not in his prime, but he is still winning titles left and right. He is the favorite wherever he plays, and he has brought a plethora of fans to tennis. Rafael Nadal, who is struggling immensely, also brings in a large number of fans despite constant withdrawals. The two players are in the twilight of their careers and have upheld the greatness of tennis. 

Since they are the two players holding fans together, Nick Kyrgios believes that when they leave, it could spell doom for tennis. While Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are coming up, they will not be enough.

Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have been hailed as the leaders of the next generation by many in the current tennis world. Millions of tennis fans also carry such a belief, but they have not managed to surmount Djokovic’s task. The two youngsters have not managed to upstage him and still struggle with it.

Appearing on the ‘What now? With Trevor Noah’ podcast, Kyrgios believes the situation has doomed tennis. “As soon as Nadal and Djokovic go, anyway, the sport is going to struggle. They’ll lose so many fans, I think. Look, obviously, Sinner and Alcaraz are coming up. But the way they’ve marketed the sport, there’s not going to be as much interest anymore.”

 

Kyrgios believes that the two youngsters still have a ways to go before they can carry the burden of continuing the popularity of tennis. The Aussie player has shared his fears and did so in the past but of a different player.

Kyrgios on Alcaraz after Djokovic loss

The French Open semifinal pit Djokovic against Alcaraz and saw the Serbinator moving on to win his 23rd grand slam title. Alcaraz managed to compete in the match but found himself injured and unable to step up to Djokovic’s challenge. After the match, Kyrgios shared his sympathies with the young Spaniard and said he would learn soon.

Players cramp during matches many times, but handling it comes from experience. Kyrgios believed that he could overcome it soon, and when he did, the tennis world should be scared.
