Holger Rune has lowkey fallen off the radar. A regular appearance at top-tier events on the calendar might’ve enhanced his experience but it did little to nothing to better his record. After failing to qualify for the season-ending ATP Finals, the Dane aimed to start the 2025 season with a triumph but, unfortunately, couldn’t live up to his potential. This, in turn, prompted an American ex-pro to discuss Rune’s problems and the challenges halting his ascension.
Despite beating top players like Novak Djokovic, multiple times even so, Rune’s recent results on the circuit have been underwhelming. Taking a look back at his 2024 season, the Danish star’s outing on the Grand Slam level hasn’t staged much success. The only noteworthy triumph he added to his resume came at Wimbledon where he reached the fourth round. He opened the seasons strong, finishing runner-up in Brisbane but his return to the season-opening event wasn’t matched with the same energy.
Rune exited the Brisbane event in the second round (his first match) after losing the contest against Jiri Lehecka in straight sets. His recent string of results invited Andy Roddick’s assessment of his work ethic and problems in his training camp. The Danish sensation split with Serena Williams‘s ex-coach Patrick Mouratoglou for the second time in 2024 after previously working with Boris Becker. His decision to hire and fire coaches in quick succession has largely affected his chances to remain consistent on the tour.

During an episode on the ‘Served with Andy Roddick’ podcast, Roddick said: “Holger Rune is still trying to find one a coach that he can have a relationship with more than five at a time and an identity as a player, right? It seems like he’s looking to his box for guidance sometimes. Jim Courier has said like the strategy changes day-to-day. There’s so much raw potential but, also a lot of inconsistency.”

In 2024, the Dane stalled while contemporaries like Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz soared. Naturally, it begs the question, can he bounce back? After a bad start to the ongoing season, Roddick has already highlighted reasons for his inconsistency.

Even American legend Jim Courier outlined similar problems following Rune’s semifinal exit at the Paris Masters.
Jim Courier said he had ‘no idea’ what Holger Rune was doing in Paris
Holger Rune endured a tough year in 2024. The 21-year-old saw a lot of success on the tour in the two years prior to that, as he lifted the Paris Masters title in 2022 and followed that laudable feat by clinching two ATP 1000 Masters events in 2023. Despite his strong showing at the season-ending event last year, the Dane remains outside the top 10 and is far from achieving similar success as rivals Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.

Subsequently, during a conversation with the ‘Tennis Channel’, Jim Courier expressed his thoughts about Rune. “I for one have no idea what he’s trying to do out here. “It’s like a full-blown jazz exploration out there. No rhyme, no rhythm. There are a lot of great things happening, it’s just all scattershot and that is not a recipe for long-term success. It’s still a very immature game.”
Rune will look to record better results at the season’s inaugural Slam as he prepares to launch his campaign at the Australian Open, slated to commence on January 12, 2025. Are you backing Holger Rune to make a mark at the Australian Open? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
