Is Alexander Zverev the best player without a Grand Slam, or is he just unlucky?

No wonder why Alexander Zverev has often popped up time and again this year during the Carlos Alcaraz-Jannik Sinner debate. The 27-year-old German has been one of the most consistent players this season. Due to his incredible performances throughout the year, he has now managed to finish the year as the world number two. American tennis legend Andy Roddick was recently spotted bringing up the German into the discussion while sharing his thoughts on his brilliance in a year of sheer dominance from Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.

However, he also reminded the fans of Zverev’s poor record against Taylor Fritz in 2024! Alexander Zverev has played 86 matches this season, and out of those, he has won 66 matches. Although he failed to win a Grand Slam title this season, Zverev made quite a few deep runs in the tournaments this year. Highlighting all these facts during the recent episode of ‘Served with Andy Roddick‘, he said,You know we talk about Sinner, Alcaraz… They are the guys. But math is math! He (Zverev) finished 2 in the world. Won in Bercy, semis here.

Just a few days ago, Alexander Zverev shed light on how funny the matchup can be at times. He revealed a bit about his discussion with Carlos Alcaraz on theuncomfortableopponents on the Tour. Zverev said,For him (Alcaraz), I think some of the most comfortable opponents are Daniil Medvedev and Taylor Fritz. For me, it’s completely the opposite. He really doesn’t like playing some of the big hitters like Jannik Sinner. He’s a great player, No. 1 in the world, for sure, but I still enjoy playing him. Now, Roddick highlighted that fact during the conversation and added,He (Zverev) did have an uncomfortable matchup problem with Taylor Fritz.”

Fritz has won 4 out of their 5 encounters in 2024! Talking more on that, Andy Roddick added,Zverev probably played better for most of the matches. Some about those moments with Taylor, he doesn’t mind that matchup. And it’s so interesting because Sinner doesn’t mind the matchup with Fritz. Zverev normally plays well against Sinner. It’s just all matchups at a certain level.

Zverev currently has a 4-2 lead over the world number one, Jannik Sinner, in the H2H. These matchups are what make the contests more interesting. They rightly point out that being higher-ranked doesn’t ensure a favorable outcome in these epic contests. However, Sinner and Alcaraz won two major titles each this season, while Zverev has yet to open his account on that note. Is Alexander Zverev the best player to have never won a Grand Slam title, though?
