Is Taylor Fritz really living up to the hype, or are we just fooling ourselves?

The 2024 US Open is buzzing with many controversies. One such spotlight scrutiny dimmed Taylor Fritz‘s recent success in the Slam. Despite his impressive performance, something else caught the media’s attention. While Andy Roddick and Nick Kyrgios came forward to peel the layers of truth, the scene highlighted how the tournament is under the public’s scrutiny.

Fritz defeated Casper Ruud at the Round of 16 in the ongoing US Open. The American star played an impressive game and won by 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, and 6-2 against Ruud. While Fritz’s performance was marvelous at the Louis Armstrong Stadium today, something else caught a journalist’s eye.

Fritz’s game yesterday garnered a lot of praise and that is when Spanish tennis journalist Jose Morgado made a statement referring to the tennis fraternity. He felt Fritz was never given the hype he deserved.

His opinion caught veteran player Andy Roddick’s attention. He quickly pointed out Fritz’s request to place his match in that stadium.  He’s repeatedly said he prefers Armstrong and requests Armstrong,” Roddick responded to Morgado’s tweet. Despite Roddick’s comment, Morgado remained firm on his statement and said, “I know that, which doesn’t change the fact that he is way less hyped than Foe or Shelton (or Gauff, of course).” However, Roddick reminded the journalist “That context is very important and was very missing.”

Kyrgios also took a stand for the US Open organizers. He shared Morgado’s tweet with his opinion. “Incorrect. Requests that court,” Kyrgios tweeted representing the reality behind such claims.

The ATP no 12 played impressively in four sets to defeat Casper Ruud. Before that, he lost to the Norwegian player in the 2024 French Open. Claiming an injury struggle before the match, Fritz was confident about facing Ruud. He also believed in his chances of victory in Queens if his performance remained the same as Roland Garros in a hard court.

Fritz was greeted by an extremely supportive crowd in the Louis Armstrong Stadium helping in his motivation. The ATP star revealed his confidence after the victory. “I’m taking it one match at a time, I came into the tournament in 2022 saying I think I could win it and I lost first round! I think it’s good to take it one match at a time,” he said.

Taylor Fritz’s Round of 16 match might spark a debate, but the American player is not bothered by it. The way he is improving his playstyle, he might not stop until he bags a Grand Slam title. Do you think Fritz can make it in the Flushing Meadows?
