There was a time when the ‘Big 4’ consisting of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray used to grace the men’s tour. But the famous tennis term later got adopted as ‘Big 3’ with the British tennis player’s competitive journey getting hindered by his injury woes. Reminiscing about the good old days, Murray recently talked about his desire to play against his arch-rivals once again.

With three Grand Slam titles in his bag, the former world No. 1 player became the nearest and most consistent rival to Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic. Now with the Swiss Maestro moving away from the tour, the 36-year-old recently opened up about how he would still like to play against Rafa and Novak, as he called it a ‘motivating factor.’

In a press conference at the Brisbane International, the British tennis star was asked if he considers playing tour games against Nadal and Djokovic as a ‘motivating factor.’ Andy Murray answered by saying that he would like to play against his old arch-rivals in the latter stages of big tournaments as he reminisced about his ‘Big 4’ days on the tour.

He said, “Yeah, I mean, obviously I would like the opportunity to play against them again, ideally in the latter stages of big tournaments. That’s something that obviously I’ve missed that feeling, not had that opportunity really. I can’t remember the last time I played them, to be honest. With Novak, I think it was like in 2017 or something.”

For the uninitiated, Murray and Djokovic last faced each other at the 2017 Qatar Open, where the Serb clinched a win in a three-set match, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. Aside from the ‘Djoker,’ the Brit also recalled his past on-court encounters against Nadal.

Back in 2016, Murray and Nadal were up against each other as they participated in the latter’s home tournament, the Madrid Open. The second-seeded Brit outclassed Nadal in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4, as he later went on to secure a runners-up finish in Madrid.

While taking a trip down memory lane, Murray recently said, “Yeah, I think before then was, yeah, 2017. With Rafa, I mean, I don’t know if I played him in 2016 or not. So, yeah, it’s been a really long time.” Even if he gets to practice with his ATP colleagues, the former Grand Slam champion added, “I still really, really enjoy that. It does bring back some good memories.”
