The first Grand Slam of the year just got over, but the circuit is still busy as ever. The ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament, which is an ATP 500 event held in Rotterdam, Netherlands, is supposed to take place from 7th to 13th February. There have been some recent changes in the draw, with Daniil Medvedev and Jannik Sinner withdrawing. The tournament organisers have offered Jo Wilfred Tsonga and Andy Murray wildcards in their place.

Daniil Medvedev withdraws due to fatigue, Sinner tests positive

Medvedev had a great run at the Australian Open 2022 but lost in the final to Rafael Nadal after an epic 5 hours 24 minute long, five-set battle. He also had to play a five-set long quarterfinal match against Felix Auger-Aliassime, and all that time in court playing such high-intensity matches must have taken a toll on the Russian.

“Unfortunately, I will not play in Rotterdam this year,” Medvedev said. “I just got back from Australia and am not ready to compete.”

World no. 10 Jannik Sinner was also supposed to be in the main draw of the event. But, he recently tested positive for Covid-19, and as a result, has had to withdraw from the tournament.

Andy Murray and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga get wildcards to enter main draw

Andy Murray had won the event at Rotterdam, way back in 2009, beating Rafael Nadal in the final. He accepted the wildcard for the tournament in place of the World No. 2. Murray seems to be in great form if the beginning of the year is any indicator. He reached the final of the Sydney International in January, and also reached the second round of the Australian Open, where he lost to Taro Daniel.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who returned to the tour at Montpelier, after a long hiatus, is to take a wildcard in Sinner’s place. He has also won the event, in 2017, when he beat David Goffin in the finals.

Richard Krajicek, the tournament director, said, “Due to these cancellations and the earlier withdrawal of Bautista Agut and Coric, Botic Van de Zandschulp’s wildcard was released. We can therefore now give it to Tsonga. He has always been one of the favourites of the Rotterdam fans.”
