Italy’s Jannik Sinner and American Tommy Paul have stormed into the final eight of the Indian Wells, thrashing their opponents left, right, and center. Sinner breezed past America’s Ben Shelton, 7-6 6-1, while Tommy Paul put an authoritative end to Italian Luca Nardi’s dream run, which included defeating Novak Djokovic. Sinner and Paul have faced each other a few times before and the American remains in awe of the 2024 Australian Open winner.

The two have had a past of friendly banter leading up to their previous encounters on the court. Continuing the tradition Paul recently made a hilarious comment on Sinner’s subliminal form.

The Official Instagram handle of BNP Paribas Open posted a rib-tickling comment made by Paul on Sinners Red Hot form. The post had a picture of Paul along with his comments, “He’s absolutely playing naked right now,” leaving fans in splits.

The caption of the post quoted Paul’s explanation, “My fitness trainer (Franco Herrero) taught me a term that they use in Argentina. When somebody is playing unbelievable, it means, like, they say they’re playing naked.” These comments were made by Paul after his win against Nardi.

On a serious note, however, the American also noted the Italian’s impressive performance, “Against Shelton, Jannik played fantastic tennis.” Paul was quick to point out Shelton’s ranking as well, although this is not the first time the American has aimed such light-hearted comments at Sinner.

After surprisingly defeating the former world number one Carlos Alcaraz in the Canadian Open last year, Paul warned Sinner ahead of their hard-fought semi-final. Expressing how important it was for him to win against Alcaraz and how he likes playing under the big lights against big players, he called out Sinner saying he’s “next up,” verbalizing his hunt for coveted scalps.

The second encounter saw them locking horns in the round of 16 of Eastbourne International Championships where Paul created an upset defeating the second-seeded Sinner again in a three-setter, 6-3 3-6 6-3. The last time they met was in the Canadian Open last year which was a show of power from both sides and saw them engaging in a 46-shot rally at one point.
