Jimmy Connors has long been recognized as a legendary name in the tennis realm owing to his 8 singles Grand Slam victories. However, it wasn’t an easy journey for the former tennis ace who had to face various defeats and challenges in order to reach unprecedented heights in the men’s circuit. Particularly, his long-losing streaks against his fierce rival and the Romanian tennis legend, Ilie Nastase during the 1970s era. For almost two complete seasons, the American tennis legend tasted 8 consecutive defeats at the hands of the 2-time singles Grand Slam champion. But then came a point when Connors got overwhelmed by a deep-seated feeling that drove him to pursue success on the court.

Reminiscing about the same, the 70-year-old recently revealed how that profound feeling has also been experienced by the likes of Roger Federer, John McEnroe, and Pete Sampras.

In his podcast show Advantage Connors, the American tennis legend recently assessed the performances of the Italian tennis star, Jannik Sinner. Connors also emphasized the fierce competition that he is facing due to his rivals, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic. However, the Hall of Famer opened up about how the 22-year-old talented player is somehow struggling to taste profound success on the tour due to his dominating adversaries.

While drawing parallels between the Italian’s scenario and his own, Connors said, “There also comes to a point in time where you say I’m tired of losing to these guys. Right once that hits you and you know you can do it, you’ve done it in the past. You’re gonna say I’m done losing to these guys. I felt that.”

The American former world no.1 also asserted that other tennis greats might have also experienced the “tired of losing” feeling during their respective journeys. He added, “No, I’m not talking for anybody else but I’m sure Borg felt that. I’m sure McEnroe felt that. I’m sure Laver felt that I’m sure you know, the, you know, Sampras felt that you know, the guys Federer and Lendl. You know, a lot of those guys get to a point where they say, I’m done losing to you.”

In the process, Connors also revealed how he felt the same pressure after facing consecutive defeats against Ilie Nastase. He said, “I felt that way when Nastase beat me a number of times in a row are like, we were such good friends.”

Apart from Connors, Federer, McEnroe, and Sampras, there is another tennis legend who might have also experienced this deep-seated feeling.

Another tennis icon, Martina Navratilova, also faced consecutive defeats during his initial Grand Slam finals during her journey. However, the Hall of Famer later ended up amassing 18 singles major titles on the WTA Tour. Notably, Brett Connors said, “Martina, I think lost her first three or four Grand Slam finals, you know, and the fuck this like, if I’m gonna get there I’m gonna start winning these things, right.”

He added, “You know, and it’s just, it’s just like some clicks and individually you know you’d like your building is getting stronger”.
