Over the recent months, there has been much debate about the playing conditions at tennis tournaments. From the nature of surfaces to severe climatic conditions, it has been an eventful season of tennis. Additionally, there has also been much furor about the balls used at tournaments. Many players have criticized the different nature of balls used in different tournaments. Recently, tennis legend, Jimmy Connors opened up about this lingering issue.

While some balls are lighter, other balls used are much heavier. Due to this difference in weight, injuries have become a common feature. Connors highlighted this problem faced by the players.

Jimmy Connors explains the downside of heavy tennis balls used at tournaments

Recently, the new episode of ‘Advantage Connors’ podcast dropped where the 71-year-old tennis legend talked about various subjects – from the ongoing ATP Finals to the fans’ questions. During that episode, he also went on to talk about the tennis ball issue.

Opening up about this, Connors said, “Yeah, beat them up is right and create more injuries. With the equipment that they have today, the rackets and the strings and now with the balls being heavy, the rackets are so light… They have to generate all that speed now, there are going to be wrist injuries and the elbow injuries and shoulder injuries and that’s going to affect a lot of players.”Further, he went on to add, “I know for a very little bit of tennis that I play, these balls are brutal. And it’s almost to playing where I can just stand back and hit balls and I don’t think I can miss a ball.”

Many top tennis stars have complained about heavier balls used at tournaments. Even the former World Number 1, Carlos Alcaraz, expressed his displeasure at this issue.

What did Carlos Alcaraz say about the tennis ball controversy?

After a bright start to the year, Alcaraz’s season has gone a bit off-track. The lingering issue about the tennis balls might be one of the reasons affecting his performances at the tournaments.

Highlighting this problem, the Spaniard said, “I think if I hear well, we’ve played with 20 or 21 different balls, something like that, in a year. It’s crazy. There are a lot of players that got injured because of that.” As the tournaments keep rolling, the issue regarding the tennis balls stays where it is.
