Recently a trusted tennis source shared John McEnoe’s remark about the ongoing Grand Slam tournament on their official X (formerly Twitter) account. They wrote – “McEnroe turns to Woodbridge and says: ‘remember when players used to play singles and doubles?’ For context, there are 60 players playing doubles tomorrow, I counted at least 29 of them having been in the singles main draws this week (was a quick count – may be more!).”

With his words, McEnroe points out that many of the previously talented singles tennis players have qualified for the doubles mains draw list in prestigious tournaments. However, only 29 singles players have qualified for the Australian Open’s doubles. McEnroe then sarcastically critiqued the current landscape of tennis. He also pointed out the fewer skills of the singles tennis players to qualify for the tournament’s doubles.
This year Australia’s number-one doubles star Storm Hunter qualified for the singles draw list. After eighteen years, she is the first Australian candidate to achieve this feat. While the whole tennis circuit is amazed about it, McEnroe seemed not so pleased with the fewer players qualifying for both the doubles and singles in the Australian Open 2024.
While John McEnroe is known for his controversial comments, he has also praised a lot of people. In this list, Serena and Venus Williams’s father Richard Williams holds a great place. In fact, McEnroe wrote great things about Richard Williams in his book.

Receiving a compliment from John McEnroe is a once-in-a-blue-moon thing. However, Richard Williams, the famous coach and father of Serena and Venus Williams left a great impression on John McEnroe. This tennis stalwart in his autobiography But Seriously, mentioned how Richard Williams’s coaching skills made McEnroe truly surprised.
“You had to admire the guy; he was certainly thinking outside a pretty big box, making my own thoughts of doing some dumba** game show feel lame…I was left dumbstruck by so much of what he said, incredulous, in fact.”
