The last few days have been an absolute roller-coaster for the American sensation, Tristian Boyer. While the 23-year-old is having a dream run at the ongoing Australian Open, his home has been evacuated due to the wildfire in Los Angeles. Entering the tournament as a qualifier, Boyer is in the second round of the tournament and will take on Alex de Minaur in the biggest match of his career. Some of his family members are also there in Australia to cheer him on. Ahead of his second-round match, Boyer shared an interesting tale about his family.

Boyer comes from a family that is fond of tennis. The American sensation was playing in the main draw of a major event for the first time and was very nervous ahead of his first-round encounter. However, seeing his 77-year-old grandfather cheer for him inside the stadium motivated Boyer.

Further, highlighting his family’s competitive side while describing his grandfather, Boyer stated, “Having outside people who aren’t part of the tennis team helps so much with that. So he’s here helping me with that, and it’s great to see him. I’m so happy he’s healthy. He’s 77, he’s doing great. He’s walking around. He’s competing with my mom about who gets more step. They’re walking everywhere. We had to move apartments because we didn’t book [the first] one long enough. And so we’re in Docklands now. They walked three miles to the club today to get to the match.”

While Boyer’s grandfather and his mother traveled to Australia with him, his grandmother, Fern stayed back home. Interestingly, Fern wants to visit Paris and is waiting for her grandchild to participate in the French Open so she can visit there and cheer for Boyer. “She’s there holding down the fort. She’s a big bridge player, so she’s playing bridge there. She didn’t want to come out. She didn’t want to miss the bridge game,” Boyer said about his grandmother.

During an interview with Tennis Channel ahead of his second-round encounter, Boyer stated, “My dad had to evacuate our house. Luckily it’s OK, but we have friends and family who are homeless. It’s really, really devastating to see. One thing that you focus on a lot is just controlling what you can control. That’s just a general thing. This kind of falls into that category. It’s something that I can’t really do anything about right now, but I mean, obviously when I come off the court and after I’ve done all the prep and everything, yeah, it’s crazy what’s happening. I mean, I just want to give people some good news.”

However, Boyer wants to completely focus on the task at hand, which is to give his best tomorrow against a player of de Minaur’s stature. His match against de Minaur is scheduled for tomorrow in the Rod Laver Arena. Can the American star come out triumphant against the local favorite? Let us know your views in the comments below.
