The year 2022 was a special one for Daniil Medvedev on the personal front. In October that year, he and his wife Daria welcomed their daughter Alisa. The couple shared adorable images on social media to announce their parenthood. Earlier this year, Medvedev baptized his daughter. In attendance was his close friend and fellow tennis star, Andrey Rublev, who was announced as the godfather of Medvedev’s daughter.

Recently, the former World Number 1 revealed the reason behind making Rublev the godfather of his daughter. Although the two are fierce on-court rivals, Medvedev and Rublev share a deep bond off the court.

Replying to this question, the Russian star said, “To be honest, yes, because as I say, we’re really close. I don’t like to, let’s say, label ‘best friend’ because I would say I have a lot of best friends, I have a lot of good friends.”

Further, he went on to reveal the close bond that the two share, saying, “But we are very close. He’s very kind. He’s kind of a little bit into how we can call it – he’s religious, so that’s important to be a godfather. So it was kind of an easy decision, yeah.”

While Rublev was given the opportunity to become the godfather, he took it with both hands without knowing the full responsibility. However, later he went on to make a shocking statement.

Rublev expressed his concerns

Despite being ecstatic at the massive responsibility, Rublev sounded cautious when asked how he felt after taking such a big responsibility. Subsequently, he added, “They lied to me! They didn’t tell me right away that it was such a responsibility. At first, I agreed, and then I understood what it was. It was before Monte Carlo, we had time for the ceremony and it was very nice. It’s an honor to be the best man.”
