For any sports person, getting older is dreadful. As time goes by, the body starts relenting, and the demand for a top-notch physique dwindles. Since he announced his retirement match at the Laver Cup, Federer had planned a final ceremony at Basel, his hometown. However, last year, he postponed the event due to the possible overwhelming emotion. Set to have the ceremony this year, Federer decided to cancel it altogether.

During his interview, Federer said that he meant it. However, rehabilitation did not pan out the way he wanted it to. After struggling with the health of his knees, realization dawned on him. His body had given him everything it could. As weeks went by, he decided to retire from the ATP Tour.
Next was the matter of finalizing the venue of his final match. As he stated in the interview, Laver Cup was chosen; regardless, it was an anxious time.

And then it ended up being the Laver Cup, which was absolutely fantastic at the 02 Arena. What a moment. I’m happy it went the way it did because I was always dreading the moment, you know, of how do you announce your retirement?”
