German ATP star Alexander Zverev is one of the best servers on the Tour. However, this was not always the situation. Since his loss in the 2020 US Open final, Zverev has made leaps and bounds in his serve. The clay season showed how far he has come as he won the Italian Open and reached the French Open final. He showed how talented players like him know the mantra to transform weaknesses into strengths. Will he do the same to turn the table in the 2024 US Open?

Zverev is all set to play against Arthur Fils at the 2024 German Open finals. Before he plays this important match at the Center Court, Zverev delved into retrospection and revealed how he managed to overcome his limitations. Remembering his 2020 US Open loss to Dominic Thiem in the finals, “The serve was the reason I lost the US Open final and I never wanted that to happen again. It’s the shot I worked on the most. The most hours, the most repetitions. It was definitely hard work to get it to where it is today,” Zverev told Bild.

Zverev’s issues with service go back long. Discussion on tennis forums would often be led by criticism of his second serve. “As is widely known the guy has struggles on 2nd serve. Double faults often and even when he doesn’t his 2nd serve is often very attackable. It’s that unreliable that nowadays rather than prep for the next shot following the return he is actually standing there hoping it goes in. On every level that 2nd serve is awful,” wrote a tennis enthusiast four years ago.

However, it looks like the ATP star paid attention to his weakness and worked hard on his service. Since he has two finals and a Masters in the bag, fans expect Zverev to offer an unbelievable performance in the upcoming US Open. This German star also hinted at this while managing his 2020 US Open heartbreak.

Alexander Zverev believes that he will be a “Grand Slam champion at some point”

Despite losing the 2020 US Open quarterfinal, Zverev didn’t show any demotivation in his speech. In an interview with the US Open, Zverev said, “I’m 23 years old, I don’t think it’s my last chance. I do believe that I will be a Grand Slam champion at some point.” Zverev’s statement showed that he was not a player who would accept his defeat so easily.

He mentioned how he couldn’t forget that loss. “I think in a way it fueled gas into the fire a little bit because I was two points away from winning it, I practiced on Arthur Ashe a couple times. There are still memories there. I still remember it, and I still have that in the back of my mind,” he said.

Zverev’s recent performances instill the player some confidence and made his fans excited for his upcoming form as well. Given that he won an ATP 1000 and reached the Hamburg Open finals recently, people expect his service to help him fulfill his Grand Slam dream soon.
