Is Zverev's fight through injury at Wimbledon a testament to his resilience or a risky gamble?

One never knows how much strength one has until being strong is the only option left! With just a little over a week left before the ball starts rolling at the Paris Olympics, the defending champion is busy battling the pain to prepare himself for the mega event. Alexander Zverev suffered a nasty fall in his third match at Wimbledon this year. He hurt his knee in the process and, as things look like, the German feels the knee will take time to heal fully. Recently, he gave an update about his injury in Hamburg and revealed how he was a bit unsure about his participation at the German Open just before his first match.

Zverev outclassed the Dutch tennis player Jesper De Jong, in the R32 by 6-2,6-2. Shortly after his emphatic victory, the 27-year-old appeared at the post-match press conference. Over there, a journalist asked him to reflect a bit on his knee injury. In a reply to that question, the German superstar stated, “Well actually today morning I still didn’t think or I didn’t know whether I was going to play or not. And then today at the warmup actually it wasn’t great.

Alexander Zverev revealed that he laid down before the match and did all the things he could to treat his knee and then afterward he felt much better. “I decided actually 20 minutes before the match to play and actually on the court I’ve felt the best since the injury.

In his third round match against Cameron Norrie, Zverev had overextended his knee during a slip and fall when he was chasing down a drop shot in the fourth game of the second set. And even with an injury scare, the German showed great focus and beat Norrie 6-4 6-4 7-6(15).

“I do feel like a cow on ice sometimes (on grass),” Zverev said in the post-match interview back then. “It is what it is but I managed. I do feel restricted on some of the movements but I will check and see what it is but I’m pleased I was able to play the way that I did. If I’d dropped in my level I would have had no chance against Cam.”

However, German fans will be a bit worried about the injury concern of one of their biggest stars in the sports world ahead of the Paris Olympics. Zverev won the title here last year and this victory over De Jong marked his 41st win of this season. Surely neither he nor his fans would like to hamper this winning momentum ahead of the Olympics. He has already set his top priority and now it’s time to execute the plan.
