Carlos Alcaraz’s coach took a sarcastic jibe at the world no.1’s rival, Alexander Zverev, in an exclusive interview. Between 2017 and 2018, Ferrero collaborated with Alexander Zverev for a total of eight months. Their joint efforts did not succeed well. The argument put forth by Zverev was that his former mentor treated him disrespectfully. In his interview with the Spanish media outlet 3iGuales, Ferrero said, “After working with Sascha [Zverev] that wasn’t that easy for me, it’s not the same culture, he understands a little bit differently [the meaning of] being professional.”
Ferrero also clarified, ” ..and wanted the same things for the future and in Carlos, I think I found it.” Alcaraz became the second-most successful Spanish male tennis player after Rafael Nadal. After winning the 2022 US Open, the Spaniard had also become the youngest player in the history of the ATP Tour to hold the position of no.1 in the world. Ferrero further shared, “He’s my second player as a coach and I think I keep learning from him and he’s learning from me.” He also explained that the young Spaniard is a very nice guy and it’s very easy to work with him.
Beginning the year at No.32 in the world before becoming the only teen to ever reach No. 1 in September, Alcaraz has had an incredibly successful season.

Alcaraz is the first teen to defeat the ‘King of Clay’ and the Nole in the same tournament
The young Spaniard defeated two of the greatest players in tennis history in back-to-back matches at the 2022 Mutua Madrid Open. He had first defeated Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. The next day he defeated Novak Djokovic in the semifinals, 6-7(5), 7-5, 7-6(5), after a three-hour thirty five-minute marathon.

Alcaraz had defeated Alexander Zverev, the then third-ranked player, and won the title in two sets, 6-3, 6-1. It was a sign of things to come from the Spanish rising star as he sensationally claimed the US Open title to cap off an amazing year on the Tour.
