During the ongoing grass court major event, Casper Ruud’s second-round defeat was a huge surprise to the tennis community. Despite being fourth-seeded in the tournament, the Norwegian tennis player was stunned by the British tennis player, Liam Broady, who is currently ranked outside the top 100 spots on the ATP Tour.

Ruud, who has always managed to delight the audience with his prowess on clay, has been struggling on a different surface. As a result, the former world No. 2 player has become a target of scrutiny from the public who are now criticising his game on the grass surface. It is his opponent, Broady, who has now come forward to defend his lack of transition to grass while he also cited Rafael Nadal‘s example.

The Norwegian tennis player has already delivered some of his best performances at the recently concluded Roland Garros where he reached the finals. However, Casper Ruud hasn’t been at his optimum when it comes to adjusting to grass given his recent match on the Centre Court. He has already been outclassed by the currently ranked world No 142 player in the second round of the Wimbledon Championship.

Taking note of the same, many questions are now being asked about his performance levels on the grass surface. Even his opponent, Broady, was asked about the former world No. 2 player’s lack of transition to a different surface. In his response, he defended him by saying that it is just a matter of self-belief and that Ruud can win on all surfaces.

Broady said, “He’s too good of a player not to transition onto another surface. It’s just whether he’s willing to you know, believe in himself and find a way to adapt his go game to another surface.”

In the process, the 29-year-old player also cited an example of the ‘King of Clay’, Rafael Nadal, who has a number of triumphs on the clay surface. However, when it came to the grass, the Spaniard didn’t have the same success, which led to criticism of his game on a different surface. Despite all the backlash, the 37-year-old tennis legend ended up with 2 Wimbledon in his bag.

Notably, Broady said that the Norwegian should draw some inspiration from the former world No. 1 player. He added, “I said it a few days ago Rafa, I mean, you know, everybody was saying Rafa would never be able to make the transition and he ended up with two Wimbledon”.

Broady also talked about the British tennis players’ transition to clay

In the post-match press conference, the currently ranked world No 142 player brought to light how his countrymen also had to adapt their games on the clay surface. While growing up in the UK, they rarely get to play on the clay surface, as there are mainly grass and acrylic courts in the country. Thus, Broady also wants the Norwegian tennis star to answer his critics by adapting to other surfaces.

He said, “I mean, he is one of the best players in the world and I think if he’s willing to, I think you, I don’t see why you couldn’t be one of the best on the grass as well. “
