Federer offered an insightful update on his knee’s condition, two years after retiring from professional tennis. For his followers, it’s well known that Federer’s retirement happened largely because of his knee issues. The Swiss legend injured it in 2016 and underwent surgery. This involved trimming his meniscus and removing a crucial portion of the tissue. Since the meniscus plays a vital role in the knee’s stability, his issue placed extra pressure on the ligaments. This led to an agonizing period leading to pain, more surgery, and, ultimately, his retirement at the 2022 Laver Cup. Now, he is back with an interesting update for his followers.
The Swiss legend was in Shanghai for the 2024 Rolex Shanghai Masters event. He explored the city’s historical and artistic beauty. Federer also reflected on his life post-retirement, his ongoing connection to tennis, and, most importantly, his satisfaction after leading a life away from the sport. In his response, the former ATP number one said, “I started playing tennis again because my knee is much better now.” His words reflected his happiness at returning to the space he enjoyed the most.
The Swiss icon continued, “The last years were so hard for me on the knee and on my mind. I am just so relieved that I’m not having to play anymore at this level.” His candid confession highlighted not only his physical recovery but also the challenges he faced emotionally and physically during his final years on the ATP tour. However, the days of gloominess are finally gone!
Federer added that post-retirement he prioritized many projects including vacationing with his wife Mirka and kids. He described how the constant pressure of hectic scheduling didn’t permit such things before. So, after retirement, he focused on enjoying time with his family which aided his rehabilitation process. In September, Federer made a similar revelation when he revealed being “back on court” during the 2024 Laver Cup in Berlin.
Giving an update on his health, Federer jokingly said on the tournament’s second day, “I’ve been at the US Open, I’ve been at Wimbledon, here I am again. I’m back on a tennis court, basically, just dressed up in a different look.” His statement highlighted his profound affection for the tennis court, even though he no longer faced opponents on the other side of the net. The experience of standing on the court and feeling the crowd’s energy was still worth it for Federer.

It made me feel how, if I play a match, it’s so much fun.”
The Swiss star is not just back on the court in full spirit but he is steadily taking steps toward reuniting with his favorite sport. Despite his retirement, his enthusiasm reflects his profound admiration for the sport. This is why he remains one of the most celebrated athletes in the tennis world.

While it is not professional, Federer’s statement relieved fans of the legend’s health. “But I’ve been playing a lot this summer. It’s been wonderful. Actually been back on the court with my kids, my friends, the weather has been good. It’s easier to play in the summer so wonderful to play. And [the Laver Cup practice] is even on film so I can keep that,” he said.
