Can Jannik Sinner's talent overshadow the doping controversy, or will it haunt his career forever?

Jannik Sinner has had a rollercoaster season in 2024. While his on-court performance earned him two Grand Slam titles and the world no.1 spot, the ongoing doping controversy has marred his success. However, the Fox seems to be confident of his innocence in the case ahead of a major verdict by the CAS, set to be made early next year.

Sinner is currently participating in the ATP Finals in Turin where he’s already made his way into the SF round. After registering consecutive victories in first two group matches, he beat Daniil Medvedev on Thursday. He comfortably won against his Russian counterpart 6-3, 6-4 in straight sets. Not to mention that he topped his group as well. After the match, Jannik Sinner sat down for a media interaction, dated November 14th. When asked about CAS’ pending decision for 2025 on his doping case, Sinner revealed that he’s not worried at all. “I have been in this position three times already. Three times we had the hearing. Three times came to my way, which is positive,” he said.

Although he admitted that “it’s not a position where I like to be in” Sinner made it clear that he’s hopeful for a positive outcome. “I’m going to work together with everyone, like I did before, then we see what comes out. I’m very positive of how it’s going to be,” he concluded. Despite doubts and speculations growing over him due to the controversy, Sinner is still getting a lot of support lately. The head of the Italian Tennis Federation, Angelo Binaghi recently came forward to back Jannik. In an interview with The Associated Press, dated November 14th, Binaghi took a sharp dig at those who are criticizing Sinner. “Apart from a few imbeciles, people all around the world understand what happened. No matter what type of decision is issued, there’s no doubt that Sinner is one of the cleanest and most honest athletes in world sport,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Fox is highly focused on wrapping up his journey this season on a high. Last year, he reached the final battle of the ATP Finals but couldn’t clinch the title and now he’s on the same path, owing to his entry in the semis.

Jannik Sinner feeling nice to make it into the semis in Turin once again

During the same press conference, Sinner was asked whether he felt any difference this year compared to 2023 after entering the semifinal round at the ATP Finals. Especially, when it comes to the amount of success he’s achieved in 2024 before going into the tournament. Alongside two Majors, he’s also won five ATP tour titles this season. “Yeah, of course. I mean, it’s always a different feeling. It doesn’t really matter how you arrive to a tournament or not. It’s nice to be again in the semis here,” he said.

But he did mention that it’s still a “different year, different player. Like everyone else, we try. I believe all of us, we have improved a lot in one year.” Moreover, he seemed excited and hopeful for making into the final. “It’s nice to be again in this positions where I can play again for a final’s spot. Then we see how it goes,” he said.
